Ellinopoula teaches children the Greek language in the most fascinating and fun way, by incorporating games, cartoons and quizzes in the learning process.
Anna Sakkis, the project manager of the groundbreaking teaching platform for Greek diaspora kids Ellinopoula.com, talks to GreekTV.
Interview by Michael Klioumis
M.K: Ms Sakkis, would you like to introduce us to the Ellinopoula platform?
A.S: Thank you for giving me this opportunity. Ellinopoula.com is an innovative Greek language learning website for Greek diaspora kids. The platform is designed to engage children in learning Greek through educationally suitable cartoon series, interactive games, and quizzes. Ellinopoula is based upon the latest educational games’ research which points to optimal learning activities being interactive, engaging, relevant, and entertaining.
M.K: How did you come up with the idea of Ellinopoula?
A.S: Both of the founders have a passion for Hellenism and the Greek language. One of them was born and raised in the diaspora and the other has lived most of his life abroad. For a long time they have wanted to create something fun for children, so children would come to love the language too. Technology now can make this happen.
M.K: Would you say that Ellinopoula can act as a supplement to Greek language teaching?
The platform is designed to engage children in learning Greek through educationally suitable cartoon series, interactive games, and quizzes.
A.S: Yes, absolutely. Though I personally believe that there is nothing that can replace a good teacher, the reality is that we all live very busy lives. In the best of circumstances, if there is a Greek school close to us, we take our children to the Greek School once or twice a week for couple of hours but the rest of the week our children are still immersed in the foreign language where they live. Ellinopoula, being available all the time, alleviates the need for travelling and takes advantage of the children’s natural tendencies to have fun and play. So why not watch a video in Greek and play with the quizzes and games that follow it or just do the quizzes.
M.K: What is the feedback of this endeavor so far?
A.S: We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive comments and feedback we’ve received from parents and educators and this places a great responsibility on us to deliver more content and a better platform.
M.K: Seems that Ellinopoula hit two birds with one stone. Meaning that apart from its educational character through learning activities, it is also fun and entertaining for kids, correct?
A.S: Yes, you are right and of course that was the intent of the founders. To make learning Greek fun. We have a responsibility to spread Hellenism and maintain the Greek language alive and hopefully thriving as well.
M.K: Quite often, second or third generation Greek kids never get to learn correct or learn at all the language. Would you agree that Ellinopoula is a tool to keep the language alive to these generations?
We have a responsibility to spread Hellenism and maintain the Greek language alive and hopefully thriving as well.
A.S: Yes, of course you are right in both observations. It is very hard for parents who themselves have been born outside of Greece to maintain the language and also help their children to learn it too. Some people also think: why bother with another language and why bother with Greek? The truth is studies show that a bilingual child succeeds more academically than the other children and Greek being a timeless and precision languagehelps them even more. Let alone that many times a spelling bee has been won because of the child knowing the Greek root of the word. And of course there is the emotional reason. I will never forget how happy and proud my son was to be able to sit with his papou (grandfather) and talk with him. And needless to say papou was so happy to talk with his grandson.
M.K: How can a parent subscribe to Ellinopoula?
A.S: It is really very easy. Once you go to the website: www.ellinopoula.com, there is a button inviting you to “start your free month“. When you click it, you enter your email and some information and you subscribe. We would like to offer your readers a discount of 30% off the first three paid months if they enter the promo code “GreekTV”.
M.K: What are your future plans for the platform?
A bilingual child succeeds more academically than the other children.
A.S: Currently we are in production of a new video with Greek Easter subject. This will be our own original production and we hope to have it ready by Easter. We have also procured the exclusive rights to some fantastic Animal series which will be presented for the first time in Greek and we are also designing and developing new games. But above all we listen to what our customers tell us and act on those wishes and feedback. Some of our coming improvements are based on feedback from our subscribers.
