Fawns is a very particular short film that balances between sensation and sensibility, innocence and loss, love and pain. It is rare to find a short film that encapsulates so many emotions in its small form and it still leaves you asking for more! The film was a Vimeo Staff Pick during St Valentine’s week, it won a Best Cinematography Award in the 20th Athens International Film Festival and it is already featured in numerous international online magazines, gaining a lot of attention for its director.
Director Thanasis Tsimpinis divides his creative time between fiction and commercial films. Thanasis has already developed a personal distinctive style that makes his work stand out. We are extremely happy to present his work in GreekTV. Please watch Fawns and read Thanasis’ interview:
Q.Can you describe Fawns in one sentence?
A.It is a story about deer, boys and the highest form of love.
Q. What was the motivation to tell this particular story?
A. It came to me out of the blue. I was reading about the life of deer and I stumbled upon the very story my film describes. I thought that this story could be relevant to any being that feels love for another being.

Q.What do you love the most and what do you fear the most in the filmmaking process?
A.I love the process of discussions- when you first describe your idea to a friend or collaborator, long before the preparation begins. I get fearful during the shoot, where there are many factors which you cannot predict. In the editing room, I become calm again.
Q. Can you share your favorite movies from queer cinema?
Milk, The Hours, Velvet Goldmine, Hedwig and The Angry Inch, Shortbus, Transamerica, Brokeback Mountain, La mala educación.
Q.Do you find that Greece provides limitations or opportunities for a young filmmaker?
A. Greece, definitely, does not provide the state support that other European countries do for a filmmaker. The production budget is much smaller and the access to equipment is much harder. Therefore, one could claim that the obstacles are more than in other countries. However the same is valid –for some magical reason- for opportunities as well.
Q. How does fiction filmmaking inspire your commercial work (or vise versa)?
A. They are both sort of a school for me. From commercials I learn the narrative structure better and technical skills, while I learn about emotion and a magical atmosphere better during filmmaking.
