Yanis Varoufakis declares a revelation on his personal blog, titled: “In lieu of a promise, in lieu of a thank you”. Watch Yanis Varoufakis narrating the full story in front of an open audience in his latest book presentation, “The Chronicle of a Crisis,”  in the Athens Concert Hall.

He closed with these words: “I’m not asking for any favors from you. I’m finished. I am asking you to do everything you can for those who haven’t reached this point, yet”.

Mr. Varoufakis pre-announced the takeover of the Ministry of Finance’s portfolio through his personal blog a few hours before it was official. Here, the minister narrates a story that he promises to keep in mind while serving as the country’s head of finances:

“A few days ago, I was interviewed by a Spanish journalist accompanied, as usual, by a Greek assistant. During the interview he intensely paied attention and seemed very interested, without saying anything. Once it was over, while we were greeting each other, her assistant asked in Spanish, to be excused for talking to me in Greek. He then approached me and held both of my hands. His eyes turned red before the first tear rolled down his cheek. With a trembling voice, he would explain, that he was homeless, an ex foreign language teacher, who lost everything and is striving day and night not to appear as a homeless. He sees his child once a month, only after he has managed to clean up and appear “normal”, working odd jobs like assisting foreign journalists. “As I will take my seat with the Ministry of Finance, I will remember these words. Not the spreads, not the Treasury, not the pre-agreed. I will remember those words…”.
