Known from antiquity as the house of the Gods, Mount Olympus was a place of high spirituality and awe-inspiring sights. A few millenia later in the broader location of Pieria, Greece presents a modern effort of ancient ideals: the Olympus Festival.
Greece presents a modern effort of ancient ideals: the Olympus Festival.
Since 1972, the Olympus Festival offers Greek and foreign visitors memorable artistic events. The performances are staged in areas that bear great historical and cultural value, such as the ancient theater of Dion, ancient Livithra, the Meditarranean Mosaics Centre and the Platamon castle. Visitors have a variety of theater (ancient and modern), concerts, exhibitions, and archaeological seminars from which to choose during the summer months of July and August.
For 43 years now the Olympus festival organization makes a serious effort to maintain a high quality of work and also contribute to the tourism development of the region.
Over the years, many great and popular actors have participated in the festival, both Greek and International: Demis Roussos, Cesar Evora, Nana Mouskouri, Milva, Goran Bregovic, and Luz Casal. Along with individual talent, an integral part of the festival is occupied by the best state and private theaters and orchestras.
Additionally, the festival’s organization in later years started profiling different cultures in the form of an annual “country of honour”. Since 2010, the Timomenis Horas (country of honour) institution was established, in order to develop bonds of friendship and cooperation between Greece and other countries wishing to present different forms of their culture. In the past 5 years, the dedications included France, Spain, Russia, Norway, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. This year the country of honor is Morocco.
Undoubtedly, the Olympus festival has established itself as the biggest festival in Northern Greece. Such worthy efforts should not pass by unnoticed. In a time of not only economic but moral crisis the Olympus festival highlights Greece’s everlasting cultural wealth.
The almost mystical experience of the visitors, in such places of high historical value, will definitely be unforgettable. Imagine yourself absorbed in an ancient tragedy along with the Olympian gods and muses of Pieria, under the shadow of mount Olympus.
